Origin

Much of the catacomb in Odessa (about 95-97%) are underground quarry where the stone building was added - limestone used for buildings of the city. In the system of cavities catacomb come from natural origin - karst caves, underground, bunker, drainage tunnels and other tunnels and cavities.

History

Underground quarry first occurred in the first half of the 19th century at the great works of Odessa as a cheap source of building material - limestone. Extraction done using the saw and was so intense that in the second half of the 19th century vast underground network of a nuisance to the city. During the Great Fatherland War catacombs served as a shelter of Soviet guerrillas - in particular units of C. A. Moldotsov. In 1961 to study the history of the guerrilla movement was created speleolozhki Club requested (mean demand), which for years significantly expanded the boundaries of mapped areas of the catacombs.
